True wireless (TWS) earbuds now range from budget pairs to premium flagships, and the spec sheets all start to look the same. Here is how to cut through the marketing and find a pair that suits how you will actually use them.
1. Fit and comfort come first
Even great-sounding earbuds are useless if they keep falling out or hurt after an hour. Look for multiple ear-tip sizes in the box, and consider stem-style or wing-tip designs if you plan to use them for workouts.
2. Sound quality
Driver size alone does not tell you much. Look for app support with a customisable equaliser so you can tune the sound to your taste. Many budget earbuds are heavily bass-tuned, which can sound muddy.
3. Active noise cancellation (ANC)
ANC reduces background noise such as traffic, fans and metro rumble. It is worth having if you commute or work in noisy places. Check that the earbuds also offer a transparency or ambient mode so you can hear announcements when needed.
4. Call quality
If you take a lot of calls, look for earbuds with multiple microphones and environmental noise cancellation (ENC) for calls. Reading owner feedback about call quality in noisy places is often more useful than the spec sheet.
5. Battery life
Check two numbers: playback per charge (5 to 8 hours is good) and total playback with the case. Fast charging that gives an hour or more of playback from a 10-minute charge is very handy.
6. Latency for gaming and video
If you game on your phone, look for a dedicated low-latency or game mode. This keeps sound in sync with what is happening on screen.
7. Connectivity and codecs
- Bluetooth 5.3 or newer: more stable connections and better efficiency.
- Multipoint: connect to your phone and laptop at the same time.
- Codecs: AAC works well with iPhones; LDAC or aptX can offer better quality with compatible Android phones.
8. Water and sweat resistance
IPX4 is enough for sweat and light rain. Choose IPX5 or higher if you work out hard or run outdoors.
