Buying a smart TV means choosing between dozens of models with similar-sounding specs. The good news is that only a handful of factors really decide how good your TV will look and feel day to day. Here is what to focus on.

1. Pick the right screen size

A simple rule: for a 4K TV, your viewing distance should be roughly 1 to 1.5 times the screen size. In practical terms:

  • 32 inch: bedrooms or small rooms, viewing from about 4 to 5 feet.
  • 43 inch: small living rooms, viewing from about 5 to 6 feet.
  • 50 to 55 inch: the most popular choice for living rooms, viewing from about 6 to 8 feet.
  • 65 inch and above: large living rooms, viewing from 8 feet or more.

2. Resolution

For 43 inches and above, choose 4K (Ultra HD). Full HD is acceptable only on 32-inch and smaller screens.

3. Panel type: LED, QLED, Mini-LED or OLED

  • LED (LCD): the most affordable and perfectly good for everyday viewing.
  • QLED: an LED TV with a quantum-dot layer for brighter, more vivid colours. A good mid-range upgrade.
  • Mini-LED: many more, smaller backlights for better contrast and brightness. Great for bright rooms.
  • OLED: each pixel lights itself, giving perfect blacks and excellent contrast. Best picture quality, at a premium price.

4. Refresh rate and gaming

60Hz is fine for TV shows and movies. If you play on a PS5 or Xbox Series X, look for a 120Hz panel with HDMI 2.1, VRR and ALLM support.

5. HDR formats

HDR improves brightness and contrast in supported content. Dolby Vision and HDR10+ are the formats used by most streaming services. Note that cheaper TVs may “support” HDR but lack the brightness to show its benefits.

6. Smart platform and apps

Google TV, webOS (LG), Tizen (Samsung) and Fire TV all support major Indian apps such as Netflix, Prime Video, JioHotstar and YouTube. Choose the interface you find easiest, and check that the apps you use most are available.

7. Sound

Built-in TV speakers are often weak. If audio matters to you, budget for a soundbar.

Quick checklist before you buy

  1. Measure your viewing distance and pick a size.
  2. Choose 4K for anything 43 inches and above.
  3. Decide your panel type based on budget and room brightness.
  4. Gamers: confirm 120Hz and HDMI 2.1.
  5. Check warranty, installation charges and service support.
